What is a kokedama?
Kokedama is a Japanese bonsai style that takes presentational aesthetics outside the box—literally. These unique plant creations feature the root system wrapped in a ball of soil, moss, coconut husk & twine rather than being placed in a pot, offering a beautiful and minimalist way to display plants.
How do I care for it?
Every kokedama is different, and its care depends on the plant it contains. The most important thing you can do is research your plant to understand its specific needs—this is essential to helping it thrive.
Like all living things, kokedamas need the right balance of light, water, and temperature. We’ll provide a care guide with each kokedama, but it's up to you to get to know your plant. With a little attention, your kokedama can live a long, stress-free life.
How long will my Kokedama last?
Because kokedamas are made from natural materials, they will break down over time—especially with regular watering. However, with proper care, your plant can live on well beyond the kokedama's lifespan.
If you soak only the bottom half during watering, your kokedama may last 1–2 years.
If you fully submerge it, the moss and twine will break down more quickly.
Tips to extend its life:
Avoid overwatering.
Gently squeeze out excess water after soaking.
Alternate between soaking and top watering.
When your kokedama starts to deteriorate, you have a few options:
Remove the twine and let the moss ball continue naturally.
Pot the plant into soil.
Let us re-wrap it for a small fee.
We use high-grade twine for durability, but handle your kokedama with care, as the twine may shift over time.

What about lighting?
Where you place your kokedama is crucial. Lighting plays a big role in your plant's health.
Foliage plants prefer bright, indirect light.
Succulent types love direct sunshine.
Always check your plant’s light preferences before purchasing to make sure it's suitable for your home. A little research goes a long way!
Does the temperature matter?
Yes—temperature is just as important as light.
Most indoor plants dislike cold drafts and sudden temperature changes, though some are more tolerant than others. Make sure you’ve chosen the right plant for your space. If you're unsure, just ask us!
How often do I water it?
Watering depends entirely on the type of plant you have. The #1 cause of plant problems is over or under-watering—so it's crucial to know your plant’s needs.
As a general rule, water your kokedama when the moss ball feels dry and light. During colder months, it will need less water.
1. Top Watering:
Gently pour water into the top of the kokedama, little by little, until it starts to drip from the bottom.
2. 3-Step Soak Method:
Soak: Place in 3–4 cm of water for 10 minutes.
Squeeze: Gently remove and squeeze out excess water (be careful with the twine).
Set: Let it rest in its display spot until the next watering.
👉 Tip: Let the moss ball feel almost completely dry before rewatering to avoid overwatering.
Extra Tips:
Mist your kokedama (except succulents) once a week to keep leaves lush and increase humidity.
Feed it a half-strength plant food during spring and summer to promote growth.

Start by checking the care card included with your order. Many issues come down to basic needs: light, air, and humidity.
Yellow leaves? Usually a sign of water stress—either too much or too little.
Mould on the moss? That often means too much water and poor airflow.
When in doubt, research your specific plant—or just ask us!
