Kokedama care

The Nitty Gritty 🌿

What is a kokedama?

Kokedama is a traditional Japanese plant art that takes presentation outside the box—literally! Instead of a pot, the plant's roots are wrapped in a handcrafted ball of soil, moss, coconut husk, and twine, creating a beautiful, natural display.

How do I care for it?

Every kokedama is a little different because every plant has its own needs. The best thing you can do is get to know your plant—check the care card included with your order and have a quick read about the variety you've chosen.

Like all living things, kokedamas love the right balance of light, water, and a comfy environment. With a little attention, they'll reward you with years of enjoyment.

How long will my kokedama last?

Your plant can live for many years, but because the kokedama itself is made from natural materials, the moss and twine will slowly break down over time. Most last around 1–2 years, depending on how they're cared for.

A few tips to help it last longer:

  • Water only when the moss ball feels light and dry.

  • Gently squeeze out excess water after soaking.

  • Avoid overwatering.

When it eventually starts to wear out, you can:

  • Leave the moss ball to do its thing naturally.

  • Pot your plant into a regular pot.

  • Or send it back to us for a fresh re-wrap (for a small fee!).

Light & temperature

Finding the right spot is one of the most important parts of keeping your kokedama happy.

  • Foliage plants generally love bright, indirect light.

  • Succulents prefer plenty of sunshine.

Most indoor plants also appreciate a stable environment away from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes. If you're unsure which plant is right for your home, just ask—we're always happy to help.

Watering

There's no one-size-fits-all watering schedule—it depends on the plant and the conditions in your home. As a general rule, water when the moss ball feels dry and noticeably lighter in weight. During the cooler months, you'll usually need to water less often.

Your included care card has all the watering details, plus you can check out our watering video for extra tips.

A few extra tips

  • Mist your kokedama once a week (except succulents) to boost humidity.

  • Feed with a half-strength liquid fertiliser during spring and summer.

  • Yellow leaves often mean your plant is getting a little too much—or too little—water.

  • Mould on the moss usually points to excess moisture and not enough airflow.

If something doesn't look quite right, don't panic! Most plant problems are easy to fix, and we're always happy to help.

Our kokedamas generally range from $55–$90, depending on the plant variety and availability.
